تأسست جامعة يو إس إم الماليزية سنة 1969 م. وهي تُعتبر إحدى الجامعات الماليزية الثلاث التي عُرفت بـ “معهد الدراسات والبحوث”. جامعة USM هي جامعة ذات شهرة عالمية وتشتمل دراسات الجامعة على أفضل الفروع للدراسات العليا والمشاريع البحثية. وهي أجود جامعة ماليزية في فروع العلوم. أحد مستشفيات ولاية كلنتان بالقرب من الفرع الثاني لجامعة يو إس إم يتبع لجامعة USM.
لجامعة يو إس إم الماليزية فرعان، حيث يقع فرعها الرئيسي في شارع سونجاي دوا (Sungai Dua) في جزيرة بينانج (Penang) الجميلة شمالي ماليزيا. ويقع الفرع الثاني لجامعة USM في مركز ولاية كلنتان. يتم تدريس كافة فروع العلوم والهندسة في الفرع الرئيسي، وتدريس فروع الطب في الفرع الثاني.
تقع جزيرة بينانج على بعد 350 كيلومتراً من العاصمة كوالالمبور وتبعد عنها مسافة 5/3 ساعات بالسيارة حيث يمكن السفر إلى هذه الجزيرة عبر الرحلات المحلية (Air Asia Flight) خلال 55 دقيقة.
تقع ولاية كلنتان على بعد 460 كيلومتراً من العاصمة كوالالمبور وتبعد عنها مسافة 6 ساعات تقريباً، حيث يمكن السفر إلى هذه الولاية عبر الرحلات المحلية (Air Asia Flight) خلال 55 دقيقة.
